If you're planning to visit the north of Gran Canaria, for sure you have at least three cities on the list:
Galdar, Arucas, and Agaete are the main destinations for the tourists.
In Galdar you get to see the Cuevas Pintadas. In Arucas you can visit the rum fabrik. And in Agaete you are able to eat delicious fish dishes in front of the ocean. Accompanied by a romantic sunset, if you make it to the right time.
But on your way to those locations, you're passing a lot of secrets that never appear in any tourist guide.
Well, those aren't secrets, really. It's only that most visitors don't expect to find anything interesting between the main hotspots. (Some are even afraid to leave the motorway.)
Anyway, there are hundreds of places around the island that aren't just for the brave.
Today, we're going to show you one of those places you definitely should stop by while driving around the north coast. Why should you go there? Because you're on holiday and you don't want to do something that everybody else is doing. You flew a thousand kilometers to have a special time, to make some exciting experiences, and to show your peeps at home something they never heard off before.
Now...There you have it:
Gran Canaria’s north coast is a rough clime with dangerous waves at the coast (don’t get to close), kilometres of banana plantation, and a couple of beaches.
But (besides El Puertillo) without sand. El Puertillo lets you take your sunbath at two sandy beaches. One’s directly in front of the natural pools. The other one at the beginning of the beach promenade.
Gran Canaria has a bunch of natural swimming pools. Great for taking a cooling bath under safe conditions, as there are no drifts that could pull you out to the Atlantic ocean.
Plus, it’s a cool place for snorkelers. Especially kids will have a great time discovering the different kind of sea animals under water. (Don’t worry, there’s nothing that could bite a toe.)
El Puertillo has plenty of cozy places for lunch, dinner, and the little hunger in between. And in case you only know the food in the resort’s restaurants, you will be positively surprised.
As mostly only the locals go to El Puertillo, this is a good village to eat real authentic Canarian food. Not the cloned glob they throw on your table in some beach restaurants in the south of Gran Canaria.
You might get something that actually have a taste. Enjoy it.
At weekends, the beaches are full of people like in every part of Gran Canaria. So, if you have the chance, get your car and drive up to El Puertillo during weekdays.
Because it will be absolutely relaxing to stroll around the beach promenade.
Take a seat in a bar to enjoy a drink, and watch the few walkers passing by. While you have a fantastic view over the sea.
Right, you also get to see beautiful sunsets at the south beaches. In fact, you get breathtaking sunsets in Maspalomas or Meloneras. Also sitting in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s La Puntilla while the sun says Good attracts lot of romantic couples every night again.
But the sunset seeing from El Puertillo is special. While sitting at the east end of the beach, you see the universe reflecting in the natural pools accompanied by the smooth sound of the ocean. Might even be a predestined place to propose.
Convinced?
Coming from the island’s south, follow the roads that guide you to Galdar.
Once you’re on the motorway GC-2, you have to pass the exit to Arucas (Just go ahead).
Watch out the white sign that says: VIA DE SERVICIO P.K.9 - El PUERTILLO Follow the street a few kilometres right next to the GC2.
You will enter the village and can search for a parking.
No doubt you will have a splendid day in El Puertillo with lots of exciting impressions you take home (also in form of photos). In any way you will see a different part of the island, a more authentic one. Go for it and feel free to leave a comment to tell us if you liked the place.
