8 Paradise for shopping lovers in Gran Canaria

25 / 03 / 2018

Gran Canaria isn’t famous for being a shopping paradise like Paris, Rome or Madrid. That’s because it isn’t a paradise for shopping. Not even close. And as someone who loves spending hours shopping, you may be disappointed when walking around the resort’s shopping centers in the island's south.

I’m not saying you won’t find anything nice. But you’re probably in search for clothes that suit your home country’s weather conditions. Since there’s nothing similar to autumn or winter in the south of the island, you won’t get lucky there. Instead, take your car and drive up to the north.

In the capital’s shopping centers, you will find all the popular brands that are well known in every bigger European city. Including fashionable winter clothes, because we freeze in temperatures below 20 degrees.

Click through eight opportunities to spend a day out shopping in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

1. Las Terrazas

Las Terrazas is the island’s outlet center for bargain hunters and those who want a mixture of a shopping tour and having a coffee or food in front of the sea. The open-air recreation and shopping center hosts a supermarket, the Media Markt, a go-kart track, and lots of fast-food restaurants and coffee bars (in addition to some well-known fashion brands such as the Nike store). For political correctness: It belongs to Telde, not Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

2. El Mirador

Las Terrazas’ neighborhood shopping center, El Mirador, helps you to spend all your money in one day. Not only can you stroll around two floors full of brand-name stores, there are plenty of opportunities for eating and drinking as well. Even the kids animation costs some money to take the last Euro out of you. The only thing free is the parking.

3. El Muelle

This is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s welcome center for the cruise ship tourists. During the night, it’s a hotspot for clubbing enthusiasts and movie buffs. You get four floors with fashion stores of all kind, bars and restaurants, and a cool place for kids animation. And all that with a panoramic view all over the capital and its marina. See it as your starting point (and parking spot) for walking around Santa Catalina and the Las Canteras beach.

4. Siete Palmas

The Siete Palmas shopping center is divided into two parts (just across the street from one another). On one side, you find the El Corte Inglés, a big shopping mall for fashion, cosmetics, jewelry, leatherwear, sportswear and toys. Plus, there’s a huge supermarket. On the other side of the street, you will get some nice places for eating out, along with some more fashion and specialized stores.

5. Mesa y Lopez

This place feels a bit like the upper-class quarter of the city, as you’ll come across many well-dressed elderly ladies draped with a lot of bling in this area. The main shopping mall here is the El Corte Inglés, which is even bigger than the one in Siete Palmas. “Let’s meet at Mesa y Lopez” is a common phrase for girls and women for spending a shopping day together with friends. They probably know why.

6. Las Arenas

At the south end of the Las Canteras beach, is this real paradise for shopping lovers. Though it’s a scary one, because they built the shopping center in such a clever way that you will have a hard time finding your way out. Plus, you may not find your car again: the wall colors are the same on both floors of the underground parking. So, plan a bit more time inside the mall and enjoy your ride. Once you enter the jungle, you will find hundreds of brand stores around you, as well as some places to rest a while for a coffee and churros.

7. Triana

The Triana is the most famous shopping strip in the middle of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. And whether you’re a shopping queen or not, this place is a must-see on your Gran Canaria holidays. Many cozy bars and restaurants let you enjoy a good meal between your shopping tour through some well-known stores. And once you’re done, cross the street to stroll around the Vegueta (the historical downtown) to follow Christopher Columbus’ footsteps.

8. Los Alisios

The newest shopping center in Gran Canaria, and probably the nicest. Besides that many locals say it’s the biggest in Europe. However, Los Alisios is a great place for spending a day out shopping in multiple famous brand-stores, and take a dinner in the restaurant zone on the top floor. Whatever your wish to eat, you will probably find it there. From chinese food, mexican cuisine to local specialities.
